THIS IS LIFE ETERNAL

Men have pondered the meaning of life from his earliest beginnings. Men and women of every generation have searched for the answer to life's meaning, but sadly many people live their lives in despair without ever knowing the truth.

Solomon, the wisest man to ever live said that he gave himself to search out everything that was done under the sun. (Eccl 1:13) in other words, Solomon wanted to know everything he could about life and its meaning. Like Solomon, many people attempt to find the meaning of life in possessions and pleasures, or in personal achievements, but are disappointed. The answer eludes them and they become more and more confused. Solomon tried all of those things and concluded they were all vanity and vexation of spirit. Solomon also concluded that much of religion was vanity.

In contrast to Solomon's conclusions, Jesus said in John 10:10, "I am come that they (men) might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." Jesus also said in John 17:3, "And this is life eternal, that they (men) might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Jesus' words may seem to oversimplify the answer, but we must keep in mind that God's purpose from the beginning was to reveal Himself to fallen man and to show mankind what true life really is.

The Struggle began immediately after the fall in Eden. God came to Adam and through the example of a blood sacrifice pointed him to the coming Savior that would save him from his sin. In spite of God's revelation, Cain attempted to please God by his good works but failed. What follows is man's repeated attempts to find life in everything but the right thing.

There are people every where who believe in God with widely varying ideas of who God is and what He is like. Some even have great knowledge about God as revealed in the Bible. But the idea of really knowing God has never entered their mind.

Thomas Jefferson, our nation's second president believed in God. Thomas Jefferson was a deist and believed it was not possible to really know God, but The Bible gives overwhelming evidence that God can be known and gives examples of many people who truely recognized who Jesus was. Jesus said eternal life is knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ.

The angel Gabriel told Joseph to name Mary's virgin born son Emmanuel, which means "God with us." (Mat 1:23) Simeon recognized Jesus as the "Consolation of Israel" and was immediately prepared to depart from this world in peace because he had seen the Lord's Christ or Savior. (Luke 2:25-35) Peter proclaimed that Jesus was the Christ the Son of God and Jesus acknowledged that Peter's understanding of that fact was revealed by God Himself. (Mat 18:13-17) Finally John 1:12 says "But as many as received Him (recognize him) to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name."

God is with us. God can be known really and personally through faith in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 1:3 says Jesus is the "express image of His (God's) person." AND THIS IS LIFE, Jesus said (whether.abundantly or eternally), THAT THEY MIGHT KNOW THEE, THE ONLY TRUE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST, WHOM THOU HAST SENT. Do you know God and Jesus Christ really and personally?
