FACING TODAY'S GIANTS

Text: I Sam. 17:1-52

INT. David's most significant accomplishment as a young person was when he faced, fought, frustrated, and finished off the giant Goliath. The story is told in I Samuel 17.

I believe this is a perfect picture of the situation facing young peo-ple today. The problems which young people face loom large before them like the giant did before the young David. What are these giants?

  1. Drugs is certainly one of them.
  2. Another giant is alcohol.
  3. Sex is another giant that young people face.
Sex is one of the giants that loom before young people of today.
David followed a pattern that enabled him to win the victory over the giant.
  1. HE DARED TO BE DIFFERENT
The Bible says that all of Israel was afraid of the giant (v. II). When the men of Israel heard the challenge of Goliath, they fled (v. 24). But notice the response of David. "For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?" (V. 26b). He dared to be different.

God is looking for individuals who will dare to be different, who will dare to do his will instead of the world's, who instead of being conformed to the world will be transformed from within by the Spirit of God.

  2. HE PREPARED HIMSELF
David did not go into the challenge empty-handed. He was prepared. He discarded the armor of the soldiers for it was too heavy and he had never tried it.
